Each Scanning DOAS unit consists of a motorized scanner head coupled with a UV-sensitive spectrometer. The scanner sweeps across the sky, while the spectrometer records ultraviolet spectra for analysis.
Two NOVAC scanners were installed at Cleveland — CLNE in September 2022 and CLES in May 2023 — on the leeward side where the plume usually passes. Operating them as a pair improves three-dimensional constraints on plume geometry and emission rate accuracy.
Processed data are telemetered in near real time to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, archived at the Cascades Volcano Observatory’s VALVE system, and shared with the international NOVAC database.
