All AVERT field stations rely on autonomous power systems to operate in remote, harsh volcanic environments. Reliable power is essential for continuous measurements and real-time data telemetry.
Field activities were conducted in collaboration with the Alaska Volcano Observatory in the northern hemisphere summers from 2021–2024, which required both boat- and helicopter-based operations. The remoteness of these systems, the limited time they are safely accessible during the year, and the challenging weather conditions in the Aleutians required the site installations to be highly robust and capable of running through the winter with limited solar power input.
The design of the sites and their power systems follows the standard AVO template. Data were telemetered in near-real-time via a combination of local radio links and satellite uplinks deployed at designated hubs on each system.
